Andy Douglas

Andy - Pushing Back The Boundaries

He suffered life-threatening injuries, surviving only due to the skill of the surgeons. His left leg was badly damaged and six days after the accident it turned gangrenous and Andy underwent an above the knee amputation.

Andy had always been a keen sportsman with football, cricket, golf and squash being some of his favourite activities.

After months of rehabilitation and adjusting to everyday life as an amputee, Andy decided he wanted more from his prosthesis and began to see Toby Carlsson and Richard Hirons at PACE. “With PACE’s help I bought a new c-leg. As good as the c-leg is it is only as good as the socket it is attached to, and with the personal attention I have received from the team at PACE I now have a prosthetic limb that doesn’t restrict me.

“Prior to meeting Toby I was unable to walk any great distance in comfort. Now, and with the help of my girlfriend, I have been walking in the rocky mountains as well as the Swiss and French Alps. I recently climbed Snowdon, which was quite challenging!

“I have also taken up mountain biking and ride the Marin Trail near Betws-y-Coed in North Wales, and at Llandegla forest, near Wrexham, although it is a struggle uphill it is a blast going down and I must say I get a lot of nice comments from people, but not from those I pass on the downhill sections!

“You need to push yourself and you need the right equipment. The team at PACE have the time, experience and patience to provide you with that. The rest is up to you.”
